Haven Behavioral Healthcare Brings World Renowned Expert on Post-Traumatic Stress to Colorado Springs for Seminar

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., March 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Haven Behavioral Healthcare is sponsoring a free seminar for the mental health and military community with internationally renowned expert Bessel Van der Kolk, MD.  The seminar will take place Monday, March 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Crown Plaza Hotel, 2886 South Circle Drive in Colorado Springs.

"This community-based training will teach us about better and more effective therapies that will help both our military and mental health communities in Colorado Springs," said Brian Duncan, CEO of Warrior Support Center.

Dr. Van der Kolk will be discussing "Frontiers in Trauma Treatment." A trained psychiatrist at Harvard University, he began his career working with veterans of the Vietnam War who were suffering what had been labeled "shell shock" or "battle fatigue" in earlier wars. Dr. Van der Kolk was instrumental in classifying this response to trauma as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and leading field trials that formalized the diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association.

Traumatic experiences alter people's relationship to their bodies in ways that leave them uptight, helpless, disconnected, hurt, on edge, and at odds with themselves and their environment. Neuroscience research is opening new avenues to intervention, treatment and healing.

Dr. Van der Kolk will present state-of-the-art research and current modalities in trauma treatment. His expertise is broadly interdisciplinary and relevant for psychologists, counselors, caregivers, educators, victim advocates, and law enforcement officers.

Haven Behavioral in Army Times

War today has extreme psychiatric consequences for our military in Iraq and Afghanistan. Often, these tragic circumstances necessitate a different and higher level of integrated treatment for those returning home. Haven Behavioral War Heroes Hospital is a comprehensive psychiatric-treatment hospital led by COl Harry Silsby, M.D., U.S. Army retired, a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, and Dr. Carrin Harper, a former flight commander at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont. The hospital is a full-service inpatient facility located within St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo, Colo. This unique partnership allows current and former military members full access to the services of a hospital while they receive personalized care from an understanding and caring staff.

Offer of Support

I am writing regarding the article about the Pueblo, Colo.-based Haven Behavioral War Heroes Hospital [“Putting back the pieces,” June 21].

Let me first pass on to Col. Harry Silsby and his staff a great big thank you from all who remain on active duty and suffer from the psychological injuries of war. My question is, where do the service members turn when they are not part of the Defense Department pipeline?

I submit that there are a number of agencies and programs outside of DoD where service members such as those discussed in the article, as well as those in the outpatient category, can receive the same type of support. One such program, of which I am the Wisconsin representative for, is the Vets4Vets program.

Vets4Vets is a nonpartisan, nonpolitical, nonprofit organization. According to our website, www.vets4vets.us, the program is “dedicated to helping Iraq and Afghanistan-era veterans to heal from the psychological injuries of war through the use of [pure] peer support.” I believe life can continue after discharge or demobilization.
